ERP for OCD

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Indiana

Have you been struggling with excessive anxiety that feels out of control? You can't stop ruminating over intrusive thoughts or images and constantly wondering "what if?" Have you realized you might be experiencing OCD?

OCD involves intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that can center around all kinds of themes. People with OCD ruminate a lot and can't dismiss those thoughts and move on. They then engage in compulsions that may be internal or external to make themselves feel better. You may find yourself:

  • Mentally reviewing events to ensure you didn’t do something wrong
  • Seeking reassurance from yourself or others
  • Avoiding people, places, or activities that trigger anxiety
  • Praying or repeating phrases to “neutralize” distressing thoughts
  • Researching the internet about topics you are concerned about

These compulsions are exhausting and can severely impact daily life.

If you’re struggling with
OCD —you’re not alone. Many people silently suffer, unsure where to turn or how to explain what they’re experiencing. It is estimated 2.5% of the population suffer with OCD and it can take 14 years to get a proper diagnosis! I also get it because I have also been diagnosed and treated for OCD.

OCD requires a different type of treatment. Did you know, some treatments actually worsen OCD?

The treatment:
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the most effective, research-backed treatment for OCD. With ERP, you’ll learn to:

  • Gradually face anxiety-provoking thoughts (exposure)
  • Resist the urge to perform mental rituals or avoidance behaviors (response prevention)
  • Reduce the power and frequency of intrusive thoughts over time

This article is great for explaining what OCD is.

I also integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into treatment with ERP.

I completed my ERP training with the Cognitive Behavioral Institute.
